Medical Gas in Hospitals

Medical gas piping is a necessary installation feature of modern medical institutions. Hospitals generally require that there be an extensive gas distribution system in place. These plumbing fixtures are extremely complex, so proper installation is of the utmost importance. Because these gasses are so vital, medical piping needs to work flawlessly and efficiently. Faulty installation can result in hazardous situations, so it’s very important that qualified professionals do the job. Whether you are updating an older building or constructing a new facility from the ground up, Cranney can help you.

Medical Gasses Found in Hospitals

  • Oxygen: Oxygen is used widely throughout the entire field. It provides patients with extra oxygenation that they may need due to a wide range of health complications. A large storage container houses liquid oxygen, which evaporates into a concentrated oxygen supply upon use. Because oxygen is vital for so many patients, it’s a necessary fixture at all facilities.
  • Nitrous Oxide: Commonly referred to as “laughing gas” this medical substance is used as an analgesic or anesthetic for patients who are pre-operative.
  • Nitrogen: Nitrogen can fuel surgical equipment and be used for procedures as well. Its also used to freeze and preserve biological samples.
  • Carbon Dioxide: Carbon dioxide is used in several surgical procedures. The gas inflates the area of focus and is also combined with oxygen to treat various respiratory disorders.
  • Medical Air: Medical air is only used in areas of the hospital where patients may need it. Air is brought from outside and pressurized before its released, so it’s not meant for the general public.
  • Helium: Helium can help a variety of respiratory issues and is often given to patients who may have breathing obstructions.
  • Carbon Monoxide: Carbon Monoxide is a generally dangerous substance, but can be administered to patients in small controlled amounts to determine lung function.

Important Features

Plumbing is the most important aspect of medical gas in hospitals. Different areas of the facility have different needs, so it’s extremely important that plumbing is set up properly. One fault or misalignment can result in injury or death of patients, or combustion.

Storage needs to be done properly for gasses. Before they are sent through a hospitals piping system, they need to be properly stored for best results. If not, gasses can expire and lose function.

Delivery needs to be precise and immediate to benefit patients, doctors, and nurses.

Waste must be disposed of properly, as it can contaminate or harm other individuals and materials.
